Scholar Coordinator: recruits and serves as a mentor and academic advisor while<br />

providing on-site individualized technical assistance to child care providers participating<br />

in <strong>the</strong> Scholars Program while pursuing a CDA credential, Certificate <strong>of</strong> Mastery,<br />

Director’s Certificate <strong>of</strong> Completion, and/or Associate <strong>of</strong> Arts or Science degree in<br />

CD/ECE.<br />

Scholars Program (<strong>for</strong>merly referred to as <strong>the</strong> Scholars <strong>for</strong> Excellence in Child<br />

Care program): provides educational opportunities <strong>for</strong> child care pr<strong>of</strong>essionals through<br />

scholarships <strong>for</strong> licensed child care staff <strong>for</strong> coursework at community year colleges<br />

toward CDA credential, Certificate <strong>of</strong> Mastery, Director’s Certificate <strong>of</strong> Completion<br />

and/or an Associate Degree in CD/ECE; and Pathway to CDA courses taken through<br />

technology centers. It also awards CDA assessment scholarships <strong>for</strong> 9 credit hours <strong>of</strong><br />

CD/ECE or Pathway Competency Certificate.<br />

School-Age Environment Rating Scale (SACERS): an assessment tool approved by<br />

OKDHS <strong>for</strong> classrooms with children ages kindergarten through 12 years. (See ERS<br />

definition)<br />

School-Age Program: a program that provides care and supervision <strong>for</strong> school-age<br />

children, <strong>for</strong> example, be<strong>for</strong>e-school and after-school programs, extended-day<br />

programs, day camps, summer camps, and summer park programs.<br />

Screen time: <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> electronic media with a screen, such as television (TV), digital<br />

video display (DVD), video home system (VHS), video games, and computers.<br />

Acceptable uses <strong>of</strong> screen are e-readers <strong>for</strong> reading and games involving physical<br />

activity participation such as Wii Dance.<br />

Smart Start <strong>Oklahoma</strong>: an <strong>Oklahoma</strong> collaboration <strong>of</strong> public and private leaders who<br />

support community-based ef<strong>for</strong>ts to improve school readiness statewide.<br />

Staff surveys: questionnaires given to facility staff to obtain <strong>the</strong>ir opinions and assist in<br />

identifying strengths and weaknesses <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> program and evaluating <strong>the</strong> program’s<br />

effectiveness in meeting <strong>the</strong> needs <strong>of</strong> children, parents, and staff.<br />

<strong>Stars</strong> Outreach Specialist (SOS): an <strong>Oklahoma</strong> Child Care <strong>Services</strong> staff responsible<br />

<strong>for</strong> processing Star applications and extensions; as well as providing training, technical<br />

assistance, and promoting <strong>the</strong> <strong>Stars</strong> program.<br />

Technical assistance (TA): <strong>the</strong> provision <strong>of</strong> targeted and customized supports by a<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional with subject matter and adult learning knowledge and skills to develop or<br />

streng<strong>the</strong>n processes, knowledge application, or implementation <strong>of</strong> services by<br />

recipients.<br />

Transition times: times when children change from one activity period to ano<strong>the</strong>r.<br />
