Senior Bowl Team Goes Far
The 1971 Senior Bowl Team went a
long way this year. They started out
by traveling all the way to Streator
to compete in Streator's annual Scholastic
Bowl Contest. The team, consisting
of Barb Toepke as captain,
Dan Field, Jan Webb, Gregg Stoner,
Doug Burke, Joyce Webb and Rob
Lininger, defeated Woodland of
Streator and went on to defend themselves
against LaSalle-Peru. Unfortunately,
the LaSalle-Peru team got
the upper hand and won, and the WHS
team was out of the contest.
However, the WHS team redeemed
itself at the Wethersfield Annual
Scholastic Bowl. Wethersfield defeated
ROVA, Wyoming, Walnut and
competed against Streator for the
championship. It was an unbelievably
exciting game and the tension was
fierce. As the final bell sounded, the
WHS team was trailing but had the
chance to win if they answered their
bonus question correctly. Unfortunately,
the team didn't know the name
of Wiley Post's airplane and lost the
match 154--150. They received a
well-deserved second place trophy.
On April 26, Barb Toepke, Jan Webb
and Dan Field appeared on WMAQ-
TV Channel 5 out of Chicago on the
show "It's Academic." They were
chosen out of 10 prospective WHS students
who had auditioned on March
26.
The show was thrilling for everyone--
both the participants and the audience.
It was Wethersfield's first time on the
program and the team did very well, though Wauconda won the game. It was a
climax for the whole Senior Bowl team to get that far.
After playing the Rotary Club "Rummies" and defeating them 186--147, the
Senior team was challenged by the Juniors to play a match before the entire
school. The Seniors came from behind to defeat the Juniors 211--150. The
Juniors, however, did have a good showing and deserve recognition. They are as
follows: Cathy Field, Cathy Churling, Chuck Clark, Mark McCormick, Bill
Dooley, Dave Hall, Mike Thurwanger, and Jack Finkle. Good Luck next year,
Juniors.
It was a terrific season for the Senior Bowl Team and they are indebted to their
coaches Miss Beck, Mr. Balsis, Mr. and Mrs. Carney, Miss Morrissey, Mr. Trainor,
and Mr. Foster. They could not have gotten so far without their help and support.
