Hearts and Hands Together—AFS
Mauro raises the Italian flag over
WHS
AFS opens doors which lead to understanding and friendship among the peoples
of the world. Through these doors pass students from 61 countries who come to
America for a year of study and firsthand experience, as well as American
teenagers from nearly every state to study and live abroad--a two way program
of seeing and showing. In this way, young citizens of the world learn to appreciate
and to respect the similarities and differences of people, who, though,
they live in different countries, have dreams and efforts similarly directed
toward the goal of a peaceful and useful life.
Mauro Mase^is Wethersfield's AFS student this year from Trieste, Italy. Mauro
has been a special part of WHS with his sense of humor and talent in enlivening
the activities he takes an interest in. He has enlightened us on life and customs
in Italy and makes WHS a better place just by being here.
Joyce Webb was Wethersfield's American Abroad last summer to Istanbul, Turkey.
She gave us a new look at an unusual and fascinating culture. Next year's
semi-finalists for the Americans Abroad Program are Chuck Clark and Lynn
Huffman.
AFS is a door which is open for us to learn about foreign lands through our AFS
student and our American Abroad student. By opening our hearts and our minds
to the wonderful things we can learn by sharing, we can keep this door open for
generations to come.
