Innovation and Technology
China until a very few years ago was discounted as a
copycat state and hence not taken seriously. Currently
the eastern empire is on the brink of a tremendous leap
forward. Already in 2010 China overtook Japan, hitherto
deemed the wonderland of technology, and gained the
rank of the world’s second largest national economy; in
fact, the Organization for Economic Co-Operation and
Development (OECD) prognosticates that in 2016 China
will actually have overtaken the USA.
Moreover, other nations that will advance, according to
the OECD, are India, Brazil, Indonesia and Mexico.
Major challenges thus await Europe if it still intends to
play its role in this battle of the giants (the present and
the burgeoning ones). Our material property will remain
affordable as usual only if we safeguard and strengthen
our intellectual property by all means necessary and
export the same in the shape of patents, trademarks and
designs to the whole world.
The Austrian Patent Office is fully conscious of its mission
and gladly makes available to innovative business official
protection as well as and especially its entire array of
services.
A glimpse into the world of intellectual property, to be
precise the current statistic of the World Intellectual
Property Organization (WIPO) confirms this, for
Europe especially, alarming finding: In 2012 Chinese
applications for patents rose by 24%, trademarks by 16%
and designs by 26%. China, so WIPO unequivocally, is
already a global power in the field of intellectual property.
