Energy and Infrastructure
The achievement potential of the railway is to be
seen daily at the western route. Its four-tracked
extention, which took part during the past couple
of years, contributed to its attractivity, but it also made it
become an efficient main traffic artery.
With the extension of the north-south axis that runs from
Vienna to Italy or directly via the Northern Railway from
Vienna to the Czech Republic, a fast and efficient railway is
built, which serves to secure the business location Austria.
The Baltic-Adriatic Axis represents an intermodal
railway corridor. It connects not only the Baltic and
Adriatic Sea basins, but also their significant ports with
main hinterland cities between Poland and Italy.
Calculation results show that the overall transport
volume in the European Union will increase by up to 60 %
until the completion of the TEN-T core network in 2030.
Therefore the improvement of railway infrastructure and
particularly the removal of infrastructure bottlenecks
is essential and moreover is a precondition for keeping
High-speed trains,
for example the railjet
or ICE reach up to 230 km/h.
Railway - the future means of transportation
the present share on the modal-split of railway freight
transport on the same level as today.
An important part on this southern route is the Main
Station in Vienna. Vienna‘s Main Station is one of the
largest urban European infrastructure projects, which
will be opened in autumn 2014. The investment profit
of the project is of substantial importance, as the south
corridor represents one of the most essential connections
in Austria and a significant European transport axis. As
a result, both passenger and freight traffic will benefit
from the construction of Vienna‘s Main Station. It is also
predicted, that approximately 1.000 trains and 145.000
people will be crossing the Main Station daily.
Furthermore, the new Main Station will become
an important hub within the European railway
transportation network. New rail connections will be
enabled, for example such from Paris over Vienna to
Budapest or new ones from Linz directly to Schwechat
Airport. Moreover, the distance between Vienna and
Bratislava will take less than 45 minutes by train.
