PETITION<br />

REQUEST COUNCIL TO PURCHASE 100 TO 102 ROSEDALE ROAD - TO<br />

ENSURE LONG-TERM PRESERVATION OF ST IVES BLUE GUM HIGH<br />

FOREST (THREE HUNDRED & SEVENTY-ONE [371] SIGNATURES)<br />

Councillor Hall presented the following Petiti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> Council:<br />

"We, the undersigned, urge Ku-ring-gai Council <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> commit <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the immedi<strong>at</strong>e purchase <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

100 -102 Rosedale Road <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> ensure the l<strong>on</strong>g term preserv<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the St Ives Blue Gum High<br />

Forest.<br />

• The St Ives Blue Gum High Forest is the largest <str<strong>on</strong>g>be</str<strong>on</strong>g>st-preserved and most intact forest<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> its kind left in Australia. It is listed as an 'endangered ecological community' and it<br />

is currently <str<strong>on</strong>g>be</str<strong>on</strong>g>ing assessed for St<strong>at</strong>e Heritage Listing as it has proven outstanding<br />

his<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>rical, cultural and ecological significance.<br />

• 100-102 Rosedale Road, St Ives, which forms part <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the core habit<strong>at</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> this forest, is<br />

priv<strong>at</strong>ely owned land. Any development <strong>on</strong> the site will have detrimental effects <strong>on</strong> the<br />

surrounding forest, endangering its l<strong>on</strong>g-term survival.<br />

• In 2002 the N<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong>al Parks and Wildlife Service recognized the Blue Gum High Forest<br />

was in imminent danger <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> extincti<strong>on</strong>.<br />

• Results <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> recent Community Surveys (Ku-ring-gai and St Ives) clearly show<br />

c<strong>on</strong>serv<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> biodiversity and habit<strong>at</strong> are the priorities <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Ku-ring-gai residents.<br />

• Ku-ring-gai Council recognized the importance <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the Forest as early as in the 19305<br />

when it purchased Browns Forest during the Depressi<strong>on</strong>.<br />

• Council is currently c<strong>on</strong>sidering spending tens <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> milli<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> dollars <strong>on</strong> building<br />

facilities.<br />

It is time Ku-ring-gai Council accepted its resp<strong>on</strong>sibility in the purchase <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> this last<br />

important secti<strong>on</strong> for reserve <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> ensure the survival <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the forest for future gener<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong>s."<br />

RECOMMENDATION<br />

Th<strong>at</strong> the Petiti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>be</str<strong>on</strong>g> received and referred <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the appropri<strong>at</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>ficer <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Council for <strong>at</strong>tenti<strong>on</strong>.<br />
