It is most probably related to generally higher activity level, eagerness to play and explore. In result incidental damage to objects and furniture can occur during play. Additionally, we found destructive behaviours to appear two times more frequently in cats born and reared in their current home than in those purchased from breeders or adopted and of unknown background. This result is both interesting and difficult to explain. Aggression towards humans Aggression towards humans was reported in 18 surveyed cats, i.e. in only 6.7%. Occurrence of behavioural disorders in domestic cats 21 from 23 to 39% total aggression cases, at least half of them can be considered aggression towards people (Kudła, 2008). Although our results were numerically low, it was possible to determine relation between this type of aggression and number of children in households (Tab. 6). Appr. 50% of cats living in households with three children displayed aggression towards humans, and this result was statistically significant (V = 0.233). However, the group was too small to draw more general conclusions. Remaining cases were reported both in homes with no children (13 cases – 6.8%) and occasionally in homes with one or two children (single cases). Analysis did not confirm relation between sex and aggression towards people, but it worthy to note that only one case was reported in intact males. Aggression was more frequent in females, both intact and spayed (Tab. 6). Aggression towards people was generally reported with cats that were permanently kept indoor. It was far less common in cats allowed out on regular basis. Although this difference was noticeable, it was not statistically significant. It can be presumed that such cats are given enough time to spend most of their energy on playing, chasing etc. and therefore are much calmer when come back. Additionally, some owners tend to mistake rough plays for aggression – when cats spend at least some time outdoor, both remain unnoticed. Interestingly, this type of aggression was most frequently reported with cats purchased/adopted from other homes, but not a single case was reported with those purchased from breeders. Once more, statistical analysis did not confirm significant relation between aggression and origin of cats, possibly due to marked differences in numbers in specified groups. More aggression cases were found in cats purchased/adopted before they were two months of age. This can be attributed to inadequate or improper socialization – people often ignore rough behaviour at plays and do not teach kittens how to control and inhibit aggressive behaviors. As shown in Table 6, aggression was displayed more often by cats in households with no other cats and pets, possibly for same reasons. Excessive self-grooming Excessive grooming behaviours were observed only in 7 cats and this number is insufficient for drawing any conclusions.
