the signal farthest downfield is at a value of 9.17 ppm, which shifted substantially from<br />

the value observed in the nitro compound indicating that this position is much more<br />

deshielded than it w<strong>as</strong> in the precursor compound.<br />

5.4.5 X-ray Crystallography<br />

X-ray crystallography quality crystals were obtained for V-15 by slow evaporation of<br />

dioxane to give an inclusion compound with the recrystallization solvent. The unit cell<br />

for this compound is shown in Figure 5-14 normal to the c axis. The solvent molecules fit<br />

into channels walled by the molecules of the target species. The dihedral angle defined by<br />

the two bridging carbon atoms <strong>and</strong> one from each of the linked rings, indicates the degree<br />
