ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to thank everyone that has helped me along my path through academia. First of all there is Dr. Steve Westcott for introducing me to experimental chemistry and believing in me when I myself had doubts. Without his encouragement I may not have stayed in the chemistry program. Secondly Dr. Glen Briand for taking me on as a fourth year research student and then again in my fifth year for an undergraduate research project. Working in his lab provided me with the skills and knowhow that were of the utmost importance for driving my professional career forward. I would also like to thank the other entire faculty members of Mount Allison University who helped me along the way. My first year in graduate school was a rocky one and I was very thankful to have an advisor who understood what I was going through. Kathryn has proven to be a valuable role model both as a professional and an individual with immense drive and ambition whom I have had the honour of working with for these past few years. I would also like to thank Richard Oakley who was on my advisory committee for being there for advice when Kathryn was on maternity leave. One of the best sources of information I found was Dr. Rob Reed. My supervisor for the undergraduate teaching laboratories, Rob once worked for Richard Oakley whose research is similar to ours in a lot of ways which made him an invaluable resource. If we iv
weren’t sure about something our default was usually “ask Rob”. And this rarely failed. I could not count the number of times I have been surprised by Rob’s immense depth of knowledge of the most obscure and yet useful facts related to synthetic chemistry he has provided when we needed them most. I would also like to extend my thanks to him for proof reading parts of my thesis. Finally I would like to thank my lab mates, many of whom I can call my friends and can look forward to a continued relationship with them even after grad school. And of course I cannot forget the squash ladder. I may not be at the top anymore, but my position is nothing compared to all the fun it has provided me over the years.
