selenium tetrachloride <strong>and</strong> powdered selenium to afford the chloride salt pymDSDACl<br />

(II-4). The combination of selenium tetrachloride <strong>and</strong> selenium powder in acetonitrile<br />

results in the in situ formation of selenium dichloride, which is the reactive intermediate<br />

used to form II-4. 5<br />

The reaction w<strong>as</strong> stirred with gentle heating for approximately one<br />

hour, during which time II-4 precipitated from solution <strong>as</strong> a bright orange powder.<br />

The pymDSDA radical w<strong>as</strong> obtained by suspending II-4 in acetonitrile <strong>and</strong> reacting<br />

it with one half equivalent of triphenylantimony. Refluxing the reaction mixture for 90<br />

minutes w<strong>as</strong> required to push the reduction to completion, after which time the<br />

black solid w<strong>as</strong> separated from the clear, pale yellow filtrate (see scheme 2-1). The<br />

precipitate w<strong>as</strong> then sublimed at 110 °C at 10 -2 torr to give large, dark purple blocks of<br />

the pymDSDA radical (II-1) shown to be pure by elemental analysis. Only material<br />

which had been purified by this method w<strong>as</strong> used for subsequent metal coordination<br />

experiments <strong>as</strong> well <strong>as</strong> magnetic me<strong>as</strong>urements.<br />
