below 1 K to give a ferromagnetic exchange term J/k B of 22 K which is the largest yet<br />

discovered for a purely organic species. 38<br />

Another recent study showed the effect of incorporating a thiophene moiety into the<br />

molecular framework of the nitronyl nitroxide radical. They found that the 3-substituted<br />

benzothiophene derivative (I-7) had strong ferromagnetic coupling in one dimension <strong>and</strong><br />

a weaker interaction extending into a second dimension to give what they refer to <strong>as</strong><br />

qu<strong>as</strong>i-2D ferromagnetic, intermolecular interactions. 39<br />

Conversely, the same paper<br />

published the 2- <strong>and</strong> 3- substituted thiophene nitronyl nitroxide which gave alternating<br />

antiferromagnetic chains with J/k B values of -6.6 <strong>and</strong> -5.2 K respectively.<br />

1.2.3 Verdazyls<br />

Verdazyls (I-3) have not received quite <strong>as</strong> much attention with respect to utility in<br />

materials science despite having properties similar to those which make nitronyl<br />

nitroxides so attractive; namely, stability <strong>and</strong> e<strong>as</strong>y h<strong>and</strong>ling in air. There are two primary<br />

varieties of verdazyls which are differentiated by the nature of the carbon atom between<br />

the two substituted nitrogen atoms in the ring. The first of these is adequately depicted in<br />

the diagram for I-3 above, such that the carbon atom in question is saturated <strong>and</strong> can be<br />

considered to have sp 3<br />

hybridization. Another cl<strong>as</strong>s of verdazyls, by contr<strong>as</strong>t h<strong>as</strong> a<br />

carbonyl or thione group in this position such that the carbon can be considered to be in<br />

the sp 2 hybrid state (I-8). 40 Compounds have also been investigated which have a<br />

phosphorous atom in place of one of the carbon atoms from the heterocycle <strong>and</strong> are<br />

referred to <strong>as</strong> phosphaverdazyls. 41<br />
