9. Oral health<br />

decay: sucrose, glucose, dextrose, maltose,<br />

fructose, honey, molasses, brown sugar, raw<br />

cane sugar <strong>and</strong> Demerara (if these are found in<br />

the ingredients list of the product try to restrict<br />

to meal times only).<br />

Try checking the list of ingredients: the higher<br />

up the list sugar is, the more there is in the<br />

product.<br />

If you want a snack or a drink between<br />

meals try:<br />

• Vegetables <strong>and</strong> fruit.<br />

• Bread sticks, crackers, rice cakes, melba<br />

toast, wholemeal bread, baps, pitta bread,<br />

chapattis <strong>and</strong> crumpets.<br />

• Cold meats.<br />

• Savoury s<strong>and</strong>wiches, pizza pieces,<br />

sweetcorn, homemade unsweetened<br />

popcorn, baked potato pieces.<br />

• Water or milk.<br />

Dental Visits<br />

It is advised that if you have your own teeth or<br />

wear dentures you visit the dentist at least once<br />

a year to look for any changes in the mouth,<br />

including early detection of oral cancers.<br />

It is important to mention to your dentist if you<br />

suffer from a dry mouth (Xerostomia), which can<br />

be commonly due to medications as artificial<br />

saliva can be prescribed.<br />

Dentures do not last indefinitely <strong>and</strong> can<br />

become loose <strong>and</strong> painful, <strong>and</strong> may need<br />

replacing or relining.<br />

Sugar free medication<br />

Ask for Sugar free medication or tablets instead<br />

of liquids whenever possible.<br />

Smoking<br />

Smoking remains the greatest preventable<br />

cause of disease <strong>and</strong> early deaths in Engl<strong>and</strong>; it<br />

also increases the risk of oral cancers.<br />
