Whole company innovation
Incentives and measures
Although teams need to be autonomous, it is important that members of the teams
feel rewarded for the work they are doing. Most learning takes place in failure and
the design process honours failure. High volume, low-risk failure! However, business
success is also a factor of time and budget – and incentives to meet these targets are
vital. Measuring the success of teams against understood criteria, established clearly
at the start, provides security. Getting things to market requires clear goals and
deadlines. Healthy competition between teams allows the bar to be continuously
raised on quality, outcome and sophistication. Teams find a sense of flow when they
are challenged and tested in an environment that provides the skills necessary to
achieve. All successful innovation, at the end of the day, is about people having fun.
The state of the art collaborative learning environment represents a complex
ecology of support systems, environment, tools and technical systems, production
systems, learning systems, project management and process support.
These represent the infrastructures required to enable a whole company approach
to innovation.
