Certificate Program in Career Coaching
LaGuardia Community College’s Career Development Institute offers a Certificate Program in Career Coaching for human
resources professionals, psychologists, counselors, social workers, MBAs, recruiters and those with professional work
experience who are interested in the field. Enhance your skills to advance in your current position or start a brand new
chapter in your professional life.
This is a 5-course program. Successful completion leads to a professional certificate in career coaching from LaGuardia
Community College/CUNY. Courses are offered on a weekend schedule.
Fundamentals of Counseling
and Coaching Skills
Review and practice basic skills and techniques
necessary for effective career coaching in this
introductory course. You will discuss differences and
similarities between coaching and counseling; intake
interview techniques; coaching groups vs. individuals,
and career coaching models and sample assessment.
You’ll also have the opportunity to practice what you’ve
learned in class through role play and small group
activities. (This course is a prerequisite to all other
program courses. Co requisite: Using Assessment in
Career Coaching.)

Using Assessments in Career
Coaching
Explore effective career interest, skills and preference
inventories that are used by career coaches in private
practice and organizational settings. You will complete
and interpret several inventories and other assessment
material, and learn how to apply these to specific client
populations. Prerequisite or co requisite: Fundamentals
of Counseling and Coaching Skills.

Experience the process and learn practical uses for the
Career Development Institute's Career Planning Model,
which covers various career coaching techniques.
You can replicate this model with your own clients.

Diversity and Inclusion Competence
for Career Coaches
Discover the importance of diversity in the workplace
and how to apply the concept of inclusion in your career
coaching. You’ll review ethics in a multicultural context;
coaching from the client’s perspective; awareness
exercises, and best practices from guest speakers.

Development Seminars

Get the help you need
Career Planning Seminar
Do you want to make a change in your career, or are
you just starting out and need help deciding which path
to take? Work with a coach to examine your professional
experiences and determine which direction is best for
you. You will assess your skills, interests and values, and
explore options to help you establish career and/or
educational plans, including short and long term goals.
You’ll also complete an interest inventory.

Enrique Garcia Bejar has taken his education and
many years of career counseling/coaching experience,
and put them all into the new Career Development
Institute at LaGuardia. The Institute offers two
programs: a career coaching certificate program for
professionals already working or interested in working
in the field, and career planning seminars for anyone
looking to change or begin a career.
“I realized that there was a field unknown to many
that provided a planned and organized way to choose
a career or job,” says Mr. Garcia Bejar of his interest
in career coaching. “It’s an opportunity to offer
individuals a process to take control of their lives.”
With an Ed.M. Degree in Psychological Counseling
from Columbia University; certification in several
Career and Psychological Assessments; and
experience in organizations including LaGuardia’s
Career Development Center and through his own
company, Bejar Consulting Group LLC, which provides
executive and career coaching to organization/
corporate clients in the U.S. and abroad, the Career
Development Institute is in good hands.
