B Rebuilding L’Aquila — Relief fund partnership with U.S. State Department completes reconstruction in Abruzzo In April 2009, residents of Italy’s Abruzzo region were woken in the early morning hours by an earthquake that shook the very foundations of their lives. The magnitude 6.3 quake resulted in hundreds of deaths, more than 1,500 injured and the displacement of tens of thousands. At the University of L’Aquila, administration buildings and residence halls collapsed, with eight students dying in just one dormitory. The academic institution, home to 27,000 registered students before the quake, was ultimately forced to close its doors. The rebuilding of L’Aquila progresses with assistance from NIAF. Rebuilding L’Aquila, cont. With NIAF taking the lead, a coalition of Italian American organizations, universities and individuals worked tirelessly to raise funds for affected victims and communities. Soon the U.s. Department of State, the Embassy of Italy and the Italian Consular Network joined the coalition to aid the citizens of L’Aquila. The NIAF/Abruzzo Relief Fund raised nearly $800,000 for relief efforts, while a public-private partnership between NIAF and the State Department helped bring 52 displaced University of L’Aquila students to the United States to continue their studies at American universities. NIAF was chosen by the U.s. State Department to lead this initiative, which was the first public/private partnership established by the Obama Administration. Sierra Nevada College, the University of Miami, the University of New Mexico, the University of Pittsburgh, the College of Staten Island (CUNY), Westchester Community College, Robert Morris University and Villanova University all welcomed these students between 2009 and 2011 to their campuses as part of NIAF’s Adopt- A-Student program. In the last year, the focus of the partnership has been to direct aid to the University of L’Aquila and restore NIAF President Joseph Del Raso at the building site of the earthquake– resistant modular multi-purpose center a year ago at the University of L’Aquila, funded by the NIAF Abruzzo Fund its role as an important academic, social, and economic engine for the Abruzzo region. NIAF Secretary John Calvelli was appointed by NIAF leadership to spearhead the efforts of the reconstruction campaign and project implementation. The NIAF Abruzzo Fund contributed to the building of an earthquake-resistant modular center at the University of L’Aquila. The building was completed this summer and, on Sunday, September 4, 2011, a dedication ceremony was held at the new NIAF Student Center at the University of L’Aquila attended by a NIAF leadership delegation. Among the NIAF delegation at the dedication ceremony at the University of L’Aquila in September were NIAF President Joseph Del Raso, Treasurer Gabriel Battista, Vice Chairman Vincent Viola, NIAF Italia President, Paolo Catalfamo, NIAF Youth Advisor John Viola, Hon.
