The National Italian American Foundation COMMUNICATIONS Throughout the year, NIAF works to raise awareness about our mission, Italy’s unique position globally, the numerous achievements of Italian Americans and the role of media in perpetuating stereotypes about our people. are pleased to share with you the many initiatives that make this work possible. Media Forums in U.S. Cities This year, NIAF hosted seven stimulating Frank J. Guarini/NIAF Media Forums featuring keynote speakers. The forums are designed to gain greater visibility and awareness of NIAF initiatives and programs, establish a greater rapport with media professionals across the U.S. and allow members of the media to consider important issues facing Italian Americans today. Chicago– february 2 Neither sleet, snow nor gale winds kept NIAF from hosting journalists and prominent Italian Americans during Chicago’s third largest storm on record. “Celebrating Italia - its history, culture and innovation” was the theme of the eighth media forum at the Hilton Chicago. Timed to honor the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy, Victoria Isley, senior vice president of marketing and communications for Destination DC, Washington, D.C.’s tourism office, traveled to Chicago and spoke about the Italian cultural citywide festival in D.C. Los Angeles area, the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy, and a special tribute to the late Joseph R. Cerrell, a former NIAF vice chairman and president, who recently passed away. The event was held in conjunction with our media forums. Harrison discussed the historical and cultural ties to Italy as well as its profound influence that continue today throughout the world-fashion, art, culture and technological innovation. Guarini/NIAF Media Forum at Ca’ Del Sole Ristorante in Universal City on March 3, 2011. The evening highlighted the 10th anniversary of the media forum with media professionals in the Greater CNN political analyst Bill Schneider shares fond memories of the late Joseph R. San Diego- august 24 To celebrate Italy and everything Italian including the 150th Anniversary of the Unification of Italy this year, NIAF launched its “Celebrate All Things Italian” reception in San Diego. Seattle – september 20 For the fourth consecutive year during Seattle’s Festa Italiana Luncheon and part of the Frank J. Guarini/NIAF Media Forums, an outstanding local Italian American was awarded with the annual Gill Centioli Memorial Award. Presented by Gill Centioli’s son Gerard, journalists were joined by fellow members of The Italian Club of Seattle Inc. San Francisco- march 2 This year’s Frank J. Guarini/NIAF Media Forum made rebuilding America through Little Italys across the United States its central theme. Marco Li Mandri, president of New City America Inc., a company dedicated to the growth and facilitation of street-based urban business districts, served as the event’s keynote speaker.
