NIAF’s John R. Mott Scholarship Foundation Inc. — John R. Mott was an Italian immigrant from the region of Calabria who came to the United States. Mott valued his education and treasured his Italian roots. After his passing, Mott left his estate to be administered by The John R. Mott Scholarship Foundation. The Mott Foundation, in collaboration with the National Italian American Foundation, awards nearly 150 scholarships each year to needy Calabrian university students to assist in the pursuit of higher education. NIAF’s Teacher of the Year Award — Kerri Titone Nottingham High School in Hamilton township, New Jersey As part of NIAF’s mission to promote the Italian language and culture, NIAF honors a teacher for excellence in Italian language and culture education in the classroom. The award is open to teachers of Italian from all across the United States, and is given to an educator who has shown dedication and made a significant contribution in the field of teaching Italian. The Peer Evaluation Committee for NIAF’s Teacher of the Year selects the candidate who best exemplifies NIAF’s mission. The winner is announced in September. Hon. Patricia de Stacy Harrison, NIAF vice chairman, and Matthew J. DiDomenico, chairman of the NIAF Education Committee, will present the Teacher of the Year award the during The Victoria J. Mastrobuono Luncheon at the Foundation’s annual Convention and Gala in Washington, D.C. In addition, the Teacher of the Year receives a continuing education grant from NIAF and the University of Foreigners of Perugia in Italy. NIAF, in conjunction with the University of Foreigners of Perugia, provides transportation, tuition, room, board and a stipend for the grant. This year, Kerri Titone, a teacher of Italian at Northport High School in Northport, New York, and a resident of East Northport, New York, is the recipient of the Ninth Annual National Italian American Foundation (NIAF) Teacher of the Year Award. Ms. Titone, a member of the World Language Department at Northport High School, has been teaching Italian for the past five years. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education from the University of Delaware, and a Master of Arts degree in Italian from SUNY Stony Brook. She is a member of American Association of Teachers of Italian (AATI) and the Long Island Language Teachers (LILT). “Prof. Titone has inspired hundreds of students with her engaging instructional delivery and her passion for Italian language and culture. Her pedagogy includes a multi-faceted approach, always with emphasis on the development of reading, writing, listening and speaking skills as well as the promotion of deep appreciation for Italian culture,” said Northport High School Principal Irene McLaughlin. “Ms. Titone has encouraged her students to embrace global perspective and, as such, has presented concepts such as nuclear energy, recycling and other environmental concerns as they relate to contemporary Italy. History is also an important component of Ms. Titone’s instruction as she explores periods such as the Renaissance and the Risorgimento with her students. Music is a big part of Ms. Titone’s curriculum as she has introduced classical Italian Music and opera as well as Italian pop and rap to her course material on culture.” The 2011 NIAF Gala 49
