Throughout the year, NIAF hosts a variety<br />
of public policy programs that contribute to<br />
the public discourse on timely policy issues<br />
facing the nation and the world. These events, held<br />
on Capitol Hill and various locations across the<br />
nation, seek an open exchange of ideas and substantive<br />
policy discussion. The Frank J. Guarini Public Policy<br />
Forum and NIAF Public Policy Lecture Series feature<br />
distinguished speakers including leading decision<br />
makers, legislators, policy experts, and business leaders<br />
offering their thoughts on the significant policy issues<br />
of the day.<br />
On March 24, NIAF held a special Policy Luncheon<br />
with keynote speaker Dr. Thomas M. Scalea, the<br />
2010 NIAF Gala Special Achievement in Science<br />
and Medicine Honoree and an internationally<br />
renowned trauma surgeon. His keynote presentation<br />
focused on injury as a global public health issue<br />
and the University of Maryland Shock Trauma’s<br />
Center’s role as a leader in trauma care and trauma<br />
system development throughout the World. This<br />
luncheon was held under the auspices of the NIAF<br />
Distinguished Speaker Series and Frank J. Guarini<br />
Public Policy Programs.<br />
NIAF hosted a number of Frank J. Guraini Public<br />
Policy Forums during the year. On June 23, Virginia<br />
Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli spoke in the U.S.<br />

Congress on the natural legal tension that exists<br />
between Federalism and the State and how each<br />
keeps the other in balance and check. On July 14,<br />
John Castellani, the President of the Pharmaceutical<br />
Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA),<br />
the advocacy arm of the pharmaceutical industry,<br />
keynoted a lecture on the role of innovation in today’s<br />
society and how it drives the economic engine in the<br />
nation. In September, the Frank J. Guarini Public<br />
Policy Forum partnered with the Embassy of Italy<br />
to host a special event at the <strong>Italian</strong> Embassy to<br />
discuss the role of Italy in the ongoing crises and<br />
