Overview The majority of operations are available as both a workstep and a process, and in these cases end users have a choice of which one to use. Workstep Make zones Process Make zones many operations available as both Workstep and Process Fig. 6-21 Operations Available as Both a Workstep and a Process Both worksteps and processes help the Petrel end user execute the necessary workflow, depending on the operation or execution style needed. They use the workstep version to build a workflow that can be saved and executed repeatedly and use the process version when only a single operation is needed. Processes are a bit more flexible than worksteps because they can be interactive. Interactive operations such as well correlation and seismic interpretation are only available as processes. You can use the Ocean API to create both custom worksteps and custom processes. Both are ways to extend the Petrel workflow to provide propriety algorithms for improved reservoir results. When you add your custom algorithm, you must decide whether to use a workstep, a process, or both. You must decide based on how your operation fits into the workflow of the Petrel end user. This convenience wrapper is a third choice that is very useful when you: • Want to model a pure algorithmic process as a simple process using a workstep behind the scenes • Need to provide both a workstep and a process • Want to use the default Ocean UI in a process See Volume 1, Core and Services, Chapter 5, “Workflow,” on page 5-179 (AW) for details.
