Looking on cooperation with the Netherlands; they have helped them to make a Strategic Impact Assessment
of the Lake Kivu and also to buy equipments which are being used for monitoring the physical-chemical
parameters of the Lake.
With the new restructuring of the water sector, the monitoring of the Lake Kivu has also been shifted in
EWSA.
In regards, to ABAKIRU, it is planned to start before the end of 2011; and they are still confusion if the
methan gas extraction of Lake Kivu will also move into ABAKIRU as it covering only two countries Congo and
Rwanda.

Bruno Mwanafunzi explained as how since 2008, the World Bank is supporting water and sanitation sector
through the Water Supply and Sanitation Program (WSP). The leading donor in the water & Sanitation sector
being the AfDB.
Officially, WB is supporting through the division of labor:
- Electricity,
- Agriculture and
- Transport.
The water and sanitation sector was a working group chaired by MININFRA and AfDB, while WSP is assuring
the secretariat.
UNICEF and WSP recently supported financially the review of the WSS policy and financial mechanisms study
for the water sector has been carried out; the latter waiting for approval by the government.
Three main active actors in the management of the water infrastructure are:
- District level: the administration
- Association of users
- Private sector.
At the beginning, it was mainly the mandate of the association of users to manage the water supply schemes
developed under the supervision of district, but with time it was find out that, association of users was not
successful as predicted, and therefore the involvement of the private sector were found necessary.
For the sanitation sector, WSP is closely working with the Ministry of Health; and in near future a behavior
change workshop is organized for health workers of 5 districts chosen as Pilot under the program BHECPP.

recommended :
- Urban water and sanitation infrastructure;
- Capacity building;
- Water management.
