We’ve all done it.
Leaving for a trip out
of town, we’re all
packed and ready to
go. We’re halfway to
our destination and we look back with a
wrinkle on our brow, a familiar feeling
tickling at the back of our mind. We’ve
forgotten something, we’re sure of it.
Reaching back, we sift through all of
our belongings, but nothing jumps out at
us. We’ve got our wallets, our IDs, our
toothbrush. We’ve got three extra pairs
of underwear and three or four pairs of
socks. We’ve got all those loose, little
odds and ends. Anything and everything
we could’ve thought of and a few we
didn’t and still, there’s that certainty that
something is undeniably missing.
It isn’t until about an hour later,
or maybe after our arrival that we realize
what it was. That the horrid, nagging
sensation of absent minded neglect was
real. It was certain. It was there all along.
And of all the things we could’ve
forgotten, this one time, we forgot our
best friend.
Except it isn’t just this one time.
We’ve done it before. More than once.
Too often. But we’ve only just now realized
it, because it began before we knew
it. It was a moment, it was a breath, a
glance, a smile, a laugh and suddenly
our entire world has changed.
Suddenly every waking moment
is spent dreaming about that one, special
someone and every night is spent in
anticipation of the next moment we’ll
see them again. If it’s love, all the better,
but even if it’s just that fiery poker in the
hearth of our loins, the fact of the matter
is, our world now revolves around that
certain someone. And that certain someone
is the only axis we tilt on, spring,
