Capital expenditures<br />
Technologies invested €300 million in the reporting period; depreciation amounted to €134 million.<br />
The spending focused on programs to increase the efficiency of production processes. At Berco in<br />
the Mechanical Engineering business unit, the rationalization of roller assembly was continued with<br />
the commissioning of highly automated assembly lines. Other major projects were mainly aimed at<br />
increasing capacities.<br />
The Marine Systems business unit completed a ship repair center in Emden. The largest lathe in<br />
northern Europe was installed at the Hamburg site; it can machine workpieces up to 20 meters long<br />
<strong>and</strong> up to three meters in diameter. Hellenic Shipyards in Skaramanga, Greece, invested in two shipyard<br />
cranes to create the conditions for repair business <strong>and</strong> modular construction in the newbuilding<br />
business.<br />
The Mechanical Engineering business unit continued the strategic expansion of large-diameter<br />
bearing production in the reporting period <strong>and</strong> began building up a ring rolling mill in China.<br />

The product range of the Elevator segment includes elevators, escalators, moving walks, passenger<br />
boarding bridges as well as accessibility products for the elderly <strong>and</strong> disabled such as stair <strong>and</strong> platform<br />
lifts. The company further exp<strong>and</strong>ed its market presence in all areas in the reporting period. Following<br />
the large orders in previous years, the focus this time was more on small <strong>and</strong> medium-sized orders.<br />
In sum they resulted in another successful year. Order intake increased significantly by 13% to €4.7<br />
billion, while sales increased by 14% to €4.3 billion.<br />
