of high (>20%) risk of CVD in the next 10 years. There was no statistical difference in referral
rates between Q1 and Q5 (p > 0.05 Fisher’s exact test).
Conclusions
This study has shown that a community pharmacy CVD risk assessment service was accessed
by individuals from the most deprived areas. There was no significant difference between the
proportions of individuals from the least and most deprived areas referred to their GP because
of CVD risk and suggests a scheme that requires payment does not only attract those at risk
from the less deprived socio-economic groups. However, males and non-Caucasians were
under represented in the study, suggesting that groups known to be more difficult to engage
are less likely to access and thereby benefit from a community pharmacy based screening
service which levies a charge.
