Conclusions: Findings from this study suggest there could be a set of core competencies for revalidation of pharmacists and technicians as well as role/sector specific competencies. CPD and appraisal were both identified as possible components of revalidation, although further research is necessary to confirm the role of employers and the pharmacy regulator in undertaking assessments. As there appears to be some variation in how pharmacists and technicians envisage a process for revalidation, findings from this study may help to inform the pharmacy profession’s strategy for implementing fitness to practise assessments in the future. Introduction: Over the last 5 years the role of a community based pharmacist has changed dramatically and pharmacists now have a more clinical and patient-centred role. In these situations, pharmacists are encouraged to be understanding, plain speaking and empathic to their patients. Empathy can be defined as the spontaneous cognitive attempt to consciously understand the perspective and emotions of others. Pharmacists who communicate effectively with a patients’ emotional state have better health outcomes than those who focus only on the patients’ physical state 1 . Medical students who scored highly on empathy tests, also performed well during assessments of history taking skills and medical examination skills 2 . Pharmacists use these skills during patient interactions and while conducting Advanced Services such as Medicines Use Reviews under the new Pharmacy Contract 2005. However, there is currently no published research into levels of empathy in pharmacy students. The aim of this study was to establish empathy levels in first year pharmacy students by comparing two types of empathy scale (one for general use and one which is specifically designed for administration to ‘health professional’ students) with the intention of re-testing these students in each subsequent year of the MPharm Method: Two empathy scales were administered to 95 first year pharmacy students at the University of Sunderland during autumn 2009.The Jefferson Scale of Empathy is a cognitive attribution measure of empathy designed specifically for administration to ‘health professional’ students 2 . The Davis’ Interpersonal Reactivity Index is a multidimensional individual difference empathy measure (which aims to give a more rounded assessment of empathy) designed for administration to the general public 3 .
