conducting MURs were a problem for fewer pharmacists in 2009 – however this remains an
issue for most pharmacists. Barriers included a lack of time (58% in agreement at follow-up
versus 74% at baseline: χ 2 = 9.46, p = 0.008) and staff support (56% disagreed at follow-up that
they had sufficient staff versus 74% at baseline: χ 2 = 11.98 p = 0.003). Pharmacists continue to
hold negative views about how GPs see the service which supports other findings. [3] With most
pharmacies accredited to perform MURs respondents were ‘happy with the consultation area’
and this was no longer cited as a barrier.
Conclusions In 2009 pharmacists were less positive about the benefits to the profession of
MURs but reported similar views about the benefits to patients. Pharmacists were less likely to
report barriers to the service suggesting that some adjustments needed to enable pharmacists
to conduct MURs have been made, although more than half still reported problems with time
and lack of support staff. Limitations of this study include the sampling method being different in
the two surveys – accredited pharmacists in 2006 versus accredited pharmacies in 2009.
