students felt pharmacists deserved to earn more than nurses. Students were unsure how
funding would be organised in the future with 73% agreeing it should be from clinical services.
Many (79.3%, missing=3) believed that these professional changes may not be possible due to
commercial pressures and were concerned about the corporatisation of community pharmacy.
81.6% (n=49) agreed that their degree prepared them for future community pharmacy practice.
Conclusions
Most students showed optimism about pharmacists’ future clinical role in healthcare. The high
degree of variation in responses is suggestive of an uncertain future. Further research with a
larger sample size needs to be carried out to explore student perceptions, as their beliefs will
have a large influence on future professional practice.
