local smoking cessation services. Other barriers to accessing services included: low motivation
towards attending group sessions; accessing services outside daytime working hours; and,
disquiet about smoking cessation products (especially nicotine patches) causing side effects.
Few suggestions about better supporting men to stop smoking were made, but included taking
stop smoking services to within closer proximity of people’s homes, and offering financial
incentives in the form of vouchers.
Conclusions
These findings suggest that men’s attitudes towards smoking may be less entrenched than
previously supposed, since most participants had previously made cessation attempts.
Strategies aimed at increasing awareness of local services, the benefits of support in quitting
and the range of smoking cessation products available may result in greater cessation rates.
Community pharmacies may be particularly well-placed to achieve this, given their ease of
accessibility.
