local smoking cessation services. Other barriers to accessing services included: low motivation towards attending group sessions; accessing services outside daytime working hours; and, disquiet about smoking cessation products (especially nicotine patches) causing side effects. Few suggestions about better supporting men to stop smoking were made, but included taking stop smoking services to within closer proximity of people’s homes, and offering financial incentives in the form of vouchers. Conclusions These findings suggest that men’s attitudes towards smoking may be less entrenched than previously supposed, since most participants had previously made cessation attempts. Strategies aimed at increasing awareness of local services, the benefits of support in quitting and the range of smoking cessation products available may result in greater cessation rates. The University of Sunderland, School of Pharmacy, Health and Wellbeing provides pharmacist prescribing courses. Pharmacists must attend nine clinical skills study days, complete a learning portfolio and spend 90 hours with their medical prescriber mentor in practice. After gaining the qualification, registration with the <strong>RPS</strong>GB is needed before being eligible to prescribe. This study was commissioned by the North East Strategic Health Authority, who also provides funding for the courses, to address this lack of data by assessing prescribing activity by pharmacists throughout the North East region. Method A questionnaire was developed to evaluate the views of pharmacists who undertook prescribing courses. It assessed reasons for undertaking the course and whether pharmacists were currently using their qualification. The questionnaire was provided in paper form and electronically via web link. Pharmacists who had undertaken supplementary, independent or conversion courses during the timeframe 2003 to 2009 formed the sample. The university’s database of students was used to identify pharmacists and their contact details. Pharmacists who did not have a current valid postal address, email or any contact information were excluded. To maximise response rate the postal questionnaire was mailed out twice, three weeks apart and the pharmacists were emailed three times, every two weeks. Chief pharmacists at all North East secondary care and mental health Trusts as well as primary care pharmaceutical advisors were asked to promote the study. The survey was approved by the University of Sunderland Ethics Committee. Results 179 pharmacists were sent questionnaires, of which 98 were returned representing a response rate of 54.7%. Pharmacists had on average been registered as prescribers for 3.35 years. Of the 93 pharmacists who stated their main employer, the majority (58 pharmacists, 62.3%) worked in secondary care, with 27 (29%) in primary care and 8 (8.7%) based in community pharmacy. When asked why they undertook the course, developing clinical roles and personal development were the main reasons. 61 pharmacists reported actively using their prescribing qualification. Of those who were not using their qualification, reasons given included; no defined prescribing role in their organisation, short term projects with limited funding ending and prescribing not being a PCO priority.
