Tree planting in open areas and maintaining forest along riverbanks are likely to produce the greatest carbon benefit per unit area. Reforesting the corridors proposed within TDIP (Figure 1) could store a total of 90-120 thousand metric tons of carbon that could be traded. Most pertinent to this area is the possibility of obtaining saleable carbon emission reduction credits through a small-scale afforestation-reforestation project as part of community based initiatives. The Lower Tana River forests represent a rare and declining habitat that has been negatively affected by developments. If this trend continues unabated it will result in a significant increase in poverty levels of the local communities leading to further environmental degradation and the extinction of many species reliant on these forests - not just primates. viii
