The Legal Resources Division consists <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Office <strong>of</strong> Legal Resources, the Office <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Report</strong>er,<br />

the Law Library and the Case Mediation Section. The<br />

Office <strong>of</strong> Legal Resources is the lead <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong> the<br />

division and assists the <strong>Supreme</strong> <strong>Court</strong> in resolving<br />

complex legal issues pending before the <strong>Court</strong>. The<br />

Office <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Report</strong>er is responsible for publishing the<br />

opinions <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Court</strong> and trial and appellate courts <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Ohio</strong>. The Law Library is one <strong>of</strong> the largest state law<br />

libraries in the nation with a comprehensive collection<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>Ohio</strong>, federal and state legal sources that is open<br />

to the public. The Case Mediation Section assists the<br />

<strong>Court</strong> in mediating pending cases, obviating the need<br />

for a full argument <strong>of</strong> those matters. The director <strong>of</strong><br />

Legal Resources provides oversight and administrative<br />

direction for the division.<br />

Office <strong>of</strong> Legal Resources<br />

The staff attorneys — known as master commissioners — in<br />

the Office <strong>of</strong> Legal Resources provided research and writing<br />

support to the Justices on the non-discretionary portion <strong>of</strong> the<br />

<strong>Court</strong>’s docket: death penalty appeals, public utility appeals,<br />

appeals involving state tax issues and workers’ compensation<br />

law, extraordinary writs and attorney disciplinary cases. They<br />

also assisted the Chief Justice with processing affidavits <strong>of</strong><br />

disqualification.<br />

Office <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Report</strong>er<br />

During <strong>2006</strong>, the Office <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Report</strong>er edited and published<br />

in print the <strong>Ohio</strong> Official <strong>Report</strong>s advance sheets <strong>of</strong> 421<br />

<strong>Supreme</strong> <strong>Court</strong> opinions, 419 courts <strong>of</strong> appeals opinions and<br />

21 <strong>Court</strong> <strong>of</strong> Claims and trial court opinions, which comprised<br />

about 8,800 advance sheet pages. In addition to posting all<br />

<strong>Supreme</strong> <strong>Court</strong> opinions and case announcements released<br />

during <strong>2006</strong> to the <strong>Court</strong> Web site, the Office <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Report</strong>er<br />

also posted 6,181 court <strong>of</strong> appeals opinions, as well as 183<br />

<strong>Court</strong> <strong>of</strong> Claims opinions and nine other trial court opinions.<br />

More than 46,000 opinions are posted on the <strong>Court</strong> Web site<br />

and are available to the public at no charge.<br />
