Why the method was dormant for many years? • In the 1980s and early 1990s high dialyzer blood flow and short dialysis was prevalent in the USA. • Most patients had graft fistulas or catheters • My attempts to introduce this method in Columbia, MO, were unsuccessful • Blunt needles were not available • There was tremendous rotation of the staff • No nurse to establish the path and champion the method
Why the method revived in the late 1990s? • I started to work on home hemodialysis machine and one of the concerns of AKSYS (company involved in the project) was problem of frequent fistula sticking. • George Harper contacted AKSYS regarding availability of better machine for home HD • Rod Kenley (President of Aksys) learned from him about the method and prodded me to continue working on the method in the USA and popularizing it .
