In the derivation show <strong>in</strong> Figure 1, we see that a comb<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>of</strong> very general<br />
rules and construction-specific ones have been applied to license this analysis:<br />
the rule that comb<strong>in</strong>es any head with a complement (the hd-cmp_u_c rule)<br />
is used for the verb phrase “<strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g losses” and aga<strong>in</strong> for “are omitted”, while<br />
the narrowly constra<strong>in</strong>ed rule that converts a VP <strong>in</strong>to a post-nom<strong>in</strong>al modifier (the<br />
vp_rc-redrel_c rule) is used to ensure the correct semantics for the nom<strong>in</strong>al phrase<br />
“results <strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g losses”. The specific lexical entry identifiers are also <strong>in</strong>cluded<br />
<strong>in</strong> the derivation, show<strong>in</strong>g for example that the entry used for “estimated” here is<br />
estimate_v4, which happens to be the simple transitive verb, not, say, the rais<strong>in</strong>g<br />
verb that would be needed for we estimated there to be dozens <strong>of</strong> applicants.<br />

The simplified view <strong>of</strong> the syntactic analysis <strong>in</strong> Figure 2 employs one <strong>of</strong> a small<br />
set <strong>of</strong> familiar lexical and phrasal category labels for each bracketed constituent.<br />
These node labels can be helpful both for cross-framework parser comparisons,<br />
and also for coarse-gra<strong>in</strong>ed searches <strong>of</strong> the treebank, such as when look<strong>in</strong>g for all<br />
noun phrases <strong>in</strong> a certa<strong>in</strong> configuration, ignor<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>in</strong>ternal composition <strong>of</strong> each<br />
NP.<br />

The compact view <strong>of</strong> the MRS representation shown <strong>in</strong> Figure 3 employs a strict<br />
ascend<strong>in</strong>g order<strong>in</strong>g convention on the arguments for each elementary predication,<br />
with the first argument be<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>in</strong>herent variable (a referential <strong>in</strong>dex for nom<strong>in</strong>al<br />
predications such as _loss_n_<strong>of</strong> and an event variable otherwise). Thus the verbal<br />
