<strong>of</strong> Xew York in 18:26. His fa<strong>the</strong>r had seven trading ships as merchantmen<br />

on <strong>the</strong> ocean and owned a quarter <strong>of</strong> a mile <strong>of</strong> wharfage along<br />

New York's waterfront. His nephew became <strong>the</strong> partner <strong>of</strong> one <strong>of</strong><br />

an Indian girl, descendant <strong>of</strong> chiefs, his mo<strong>the</strong>r cut him <strong>of</strong>f with one<br />

dollar and never claimed him again as her son.<br />
