<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> earliest settlements in <strong>the</strong> state. He spent some hme 111 Ins<br />
early days panning gold 'with <strong>the</strong> Chinese?n <strong>the</strong> upper Columbia.<br />
This was about 1850. He stated he sold thIS gold to Marcus Oppenheimer<br />
after whom <strong>the</strong> present town <strong>of</strong> :Marcus is named. He also recalls<br />
a visit <strong>of</strong> GO\'ernor Ste,-ens to this territory in 1855 when treaties<br />
with <strong>the</strong> Indians ,,'ere concluded,<br />
}Jr. ,Yilliams helieYes he is <strong>the</strong> oldest living member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sky-Loa<br />
tribe. His fa<strong>the</strong>r was Chief Elm-Ec-Stox and he says this means<br />
"~Iartin" in English.<br />
}1r. Williams savs he wa~ married twice, <strong>the</strong> last time in 1870. He<br />

said <strong>the</strong> man who lwrformed <strong>the</strong> eeremony at <strong>the</strong> l'.Iission was l"a<strong>the</strong>r<br />
Ca-Sak-'Ya, which means"left hand." The records at <strong>the</strong> }lission indieate<br />
that this was prohahl:' Fa<strong>the</strong>r Tassi.<br />

Jas()]l Lt·p, first missionar:' to <strong>the</strong> west, kept a diary <strong>of</strong> his trip. He<br />
established <strong>the</strong> }lethodist missioll work in Oregon and stopped at aIel<br />
Fort "'alIa Walla, Septemhcl' I, lKH, on his journey to <strong>the</strong> ,Yillamefte<br />
valle\".<br />

His clair:' shows that he arri"eu at Lihert;', ;'10., on SUllc1a:', April<br />
~O, 1834, on his ,va:,' to <strong>the</strong> Fla<strong>the</strong>ad Indians. He joined Capt. Kathan,<br />
iel J. Wyeth. The actual start to <strong>the</strong> west was made April 28.<br />
First mention <strong>of</strong> ,Valla 'Valla comes all .June 21, after <strong>the</strong> party<br />
reached <strong>the</strong> rendezvous on Green Ri\'t'l'.<br />
".A mall who has just come from "Talla \Valla gave us some eneouraging<br />
informHtion," he wrote. "Blessed be God, I feel more and marc<br />
to rejoice I was ever counted "'orthy to carry <strong>the</strong> glad news <strong>of</strong> salvation<br />
to <strong>the</strong> far western world."<br />
The following clay he wrote about talking with some Indians (Nez<br />
Perees and Fla<strong>the</strong>ads).<br />
"The:,' inquired if we could build houses, and said that <strong>the</strong> Indians<br />
at \Vallah 'Vallah g'm'e horses to a white man to build <strong>the</strong>m it house,<br />
