<strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pioneers<br />
half perhaps understood little. I was careful not to shun to declare<br />
<strong>the</strong> whole council <strong>of</strong> God and an influence was felt but I fear it was <strong>of</strong><br />
short duration, for <strong>the</strong> gentlemen continued <strong>the</strong>ir business after ser<br />
Yices, I think without paying' any attention to its being Sabbath.<br />
"!\1ay 2 Having' provisions, pack saddles, etc. nearly in readiness<br />
I went again to see <strong>the</strong> Dr. and :Mrs. Whitman.<br />
"F'riday, 4 Thinking my letters had probably arrived I started<br />
for Wort ,Valla Walla) and met Bro. Edwards coming 'with <strong>the</strong>m.<br />
Returning' to read <strong>the</strong>m. 'Was greatly rejoiced and refreshed to hear<br />
from all my friends and especially from my dear wife.<br />

Got Horses<br />
"Tuesda~', 8 Received 25 horses from ~1r. P. <strong>of</strong> ,,,hich I had 16.<br />
~1essrs. E. & E., 6 each. Packed and came about 2 mi.<br />
"0-Crossed goods in boat amI canoe oyer <strong>the</strong> ,Valla ,Valla riyer.<br />
Horses swam.<br />
"IO-Came 10 mi. Camped on <strong>the</strong> ,Valla ,Valla R.<br />
"l1-Left camp and came to Dr ,V. and met ~Ir. Spaulding' <strong>the</strong>re.<br />
had a good yisit<br />
"12-Came to camp accompanied <strong>by</strong> ~1rs. S. and ~Irs. ,V. It 'was ill<br />
motion and we passed on to <strong>the</strong> front <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> camp. I <strong>the</strong>re r('mailled<br />
with <strong>the</strong>m till all w('re past and ,,,e kneeled upon <strong>the</strong> bank <strong>of</strong> a small<br />
stream and ::\11'. S. commended us to <strong>the</strong> throne <strong>of</strong> grace, we th('n took<br />
<strong>the</strong> parting hand and <strong>the</strong>~' returned to <strong>the</strong>ir arduous labors; and I<br />
pensi\'el~' pursued camp for <strong>the</strong> pleasing acquaintance thus formed.<br />
Preached at Camp<br />
"13, Sun. Should ha\'e remained O\'er Sabhath with Dr. ""Y. but<br />
was not willillg to lose <strong>the</strong> opportunity <strong>of</strong> preaching to camp, heing<br />
informed it would not moye on that day but was greatly disappointed;<br />
<strong>the</strong> rain falling all day in such torrents that it was not practicable.<br />
"1'1 Rain continued with unabated force und we did mo\·e. Ra<strong>the</strong>r<br />
uncomfortable.<br />
"15 Came to riyer ::\1oreau. Fell a tree and carried <strong>the</strong> baggage.<br />
"16-Reached <strong>the</strong> Utilla (Umatilla). Many Kioos (Cayuse) came.<br />
"17-Remained, water too high to ford.<br />
"18-Crossed and camped.<br />
"~Ir. Edward's horse reared up in <strong>the</strong> river, fell back and he fell<br />
under him and with some difficulty extricated himself without injury.<br />
::\11'. Ermatinger arrived from Vancouver. Though this is <strong>the</strong> 11th day<br />
since we left yet a man could easily ride to Walla ,Valla in one day."<br />
The following day <strong>the</strong> party reached <strong>the</strong> top <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Blue mountains<br />
and on <strong>the</strong> next day reached Grande Ronde river.<br />
The trip continued on east, it being one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> several hazardous<br />
journeys made <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong> early pioneers.<br />
