<strong>Told</strong> <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pioneers<br />
Sunday 27th. The large canoe which has been repeatedly stolen<br />
was today (found) in <strong>the</strong> Sequallitch Creek whence it cannot be removed<br />
without much labor.<br />
The men assisted <strong>by</strong> Indians have removed a haystack from <strong>the</strong> marsh<br />
to a dry spot in tis vicinity <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs have been working at <strong>the</strong> house<br />
as on Saturdav.<br />

Tuesday 29th. The wea<strong>the</strong>r being favorable we today felled several<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> large pines growing in <strong>the</strong> immediate vicinity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> establishment,<br />
"which could not at a future period be so conveniently cut down<br />
and if overthrown <strong>by</strong> a storm might be productive <strong>of</strong> serious damages<br />
~o us.<br />
,Yednesday 30th. l\Ien emploved as yesterday. A few Thuanook<br />
arrived ,,"'ith beanr but have not traded.<br />
Thursda:," 31st. The progress <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> house being retarded for <strong>the</strong><br />
present owing to <strong>the</strong> want <strong>of</strong> boards for <strong>the</strong> ro<strong>of</strong>and flooring two men<br />
commenced arranging <strong>the</strong> pickets on <strong>the</strong> ground and three have been<br />
forming a cart road to <strong>the</strong> beach.<br />
According to custom this has been observed as a holi<br />

Saturday 2nd. There being sufficiency <strong>of</strong> sound boards for that<br />
purpose <strong>the</strong> ro<strong>of</strong>ing <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> portion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> house intended for Mr. Heron's<br />
apartment has employed <strong>the</strong>ir men <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r three have been arranging<br />
<strong>the</strong> pickets.<br />

Monday 4th. A chimney begun in :Jlr. H's apartment which has received<br />
a temporary flooring one man procuring clay, two engaged as<br />
yesterday with <strong>the</strong> pickets.<br />

Work progressing as yesterday.<br />
,Vednesdav 6th. M. Heron's room lined with mate and o<strong>the</strong>rwise<br />

Monday 11th. ,York resumed as on Saturday except that one man<br />
was employed in bringing home <strong>the</strong> pickets. This evening an Indian<br />
brought a note from Mr. Heron dated at Cowlitz Prairie 9th currt.<br />
!\Ir. Heron asks a canoe to meet him at <strong>the</strong> Chute.<br />
Tuesday 12th. From <strong>the</strong> purport <strong>of</strong> Mr. H letter <strong>the</strong> immediate arrival<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Cadboros may be expected: Four men were <strong>the</strong>refore Bet<br />
to work at <strong>the</strong> road begun on <strong>the</strong> 31st ult. The large canoe manned<br />
