40 SECTION J Active Communities The goal of this resource is for all New Zealanders to grow up being involved in Active Movement every day, in as many different ways as possible. The active community has a vital and significant place in moving towards achieving this goal. Ensuring that children in their early years, their families, and their whanau, have the services and environments for Active Movement opportunities will meet this goal. The challenge is to provide opportunities for, access to and support for Active Movement in a variety of settings other than the home and early childhood centre. Improving Active Movement settings will require knowledge about the development of a child in their early years. It is recommended that the other sections of the document, particularly the Active Child, Active Learner section, will assist in understanding and providing for the active child.
SECTION J 41 Active Movement Settings Children enjoy open space and the simple things in life with an energy and innocent enthusiasm that needs encouragement and support. Children are great users of our parks, swimming pools, playgrounds, open spaces, courts and sporting facilities. These experiences: > allow children to develop environmental awareness, an attachment and appreciation for the land and facilities; > provide opportunities for social gatherings and positive group activities; > provide safe environments for children to experience active movement; > assist parents and caregivers to give their children quality active movement opportunities otherwise out of reach; > provide a collective health benefit for the community; and > provide educational opportunities in an alternative educational medium and a method for addressing learning difficulties. Currently the focus tends centres to be on Active Movement taking place at childcare centres or as a separate, special activity. The challenge is to provide access to and support for Active Movement in a variety of other settings where children interact. This will include education settings but also considers the family, whanau, the influence of friends and peers and a broad range of community-based groups. Active Movement is about daily life.
