Space-borne sub-millimeter wave heterodyne instruments can give unique information on the distribution of infrared-active molecules in the Earth’s upper troposphere and lower stratosphere [1]. In order to resolve fully the emissions from key molecular species in the troposphere, it is necessary to separate the receiver sidebands. Previous air-borne limb sounding instruments, e.g. MARSCHALS [2], have used frequency selective surfaces in the optical path to reject the unwanted sideband. Advances in radio astronomy during the past decade have resulted in the development of efficient sideband separating SIS mixers for most of the ALMA bands [3]. We present the first extension of this approach to semiconductor mixers, reporting on the design and development of a 320 - 360 GHz Sub- Harmonic Image Rejection Mixer (SHIRM) that uses planar Schottky diodes. The SHIRM architecture features two anti-parallel pairs of planar Schottky diodes flipchip mounted onto a single quartz-based microstrip circuit. The RF signal is coupled in phase to both Schottky devices, whereas a phase difference of 45 o is introduced between the LO signals by using a waveguide quadrature hybrid and stub-loaded phase shifter, all integrated inside the SHIRM block. The desired sideband separation is achieved by externally recombining the IF outputs using a commercial broadband quadrature hybrid. The entire circuit has been optimized using a combination of three-dimensional electromagnetic simulations, and linear/non-linear circuit simulations. The SHIRM is predicted to have single sideband conversion losses and noise temperatures of approximately 10 dB and 2200 K respectively. The calculated sideband image rejection is better than 15 dB over the entire 320-360 GHz frequency range. Assembly and test of the SHIRM have begun. Measurements will be presented and compared with results from a single sideband receiver formed from a 300-350 GHz double sideband sub-harmonic Schottky mixer with an integrated IF pre-amplifier and a 310 GHz frequency selective surface. This receiver has a single sideband noise temperature of 5000 K and a side band image rejection of approximately 30 dB [2].
