QUALIFICATION<br />
5 Programme delivery<br />
<strong>Edexcel</strong> does not def<strong>in</strong>e the mode <strong>of</strong> study for <strong>BTEC</strong> qualifications. Your centre is free<br />
to <strong>of</strong>fer the qualification us<strong>in</strong>g any mode <strong>of</strong> delivery (such as full-time, part-time,<br />
even<strong>in</strong>g only or distance learn<strong>in</strong>g) that meets your learners’ needs. As such, those<br />
already employed <strong>in</strong> the applied science sector could study for the <strong>BTEC</strong> <strong>First</strong> <strong>Award</strong><br />
on a part-time basis, us<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dustry knowledge and expertise ga<strong>in</strong>ed from the<br />
workplace to develop evidence towards meet<strong>in</strong>g the unit assessment criteria.<br />
Whichever mode <strong>of</strong> delivery is used, your centre must ensure that learners have<br />
appropriate access to the resources identified <strong>in</strong> the <strong>specification</strong> and to the subject<br />
specialists who are deliver<strong>in</strong>g the units. This is particularly important for learners<br />
study<strong>in</strong>g for the qualification through open or distance learn<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
When plann<strong>in</strong>g the programme, you should aim to enhance the vocational nature <strong>of</strong><br />
the qualification by:<br />
● us<strong>in</strong>g up-to-date and relevant teach<strong>in</strong>g materials that make use <strong>of</strong> scenarios<br />
relevant to the scope and variety <strong>of</strong> employment opportunities available <strong>in</strong> the<br />
sector – these materials may be drawn from workplace sett<strong>in</strong>gs where this is<br />
feasible, for example, draw<strong>in</strong>g on local <strong>in</strong>dustrial processes that can exemplify<br />
the way firms draw on scientific pr<strong>in</strong>ciples <strong>in</strong> manufactur<strong>in</strong>g<br />
● giv<strong>in</strong>g learners the opportunity to apply their learn<strong>in</strong>g through practical activities<br />
to be found <strong>in</strong> the workplace, for example, how key pr<strong>in</strong>ciples <strong>of</strong> biology, chemistry<br />
and physics and <strong>in</strong>vestigative techniques underp<strong>in</strong> how scientific organisations<br />
operate<br />
● <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g employers <strong>in</strong> the delivery <strong>of</strong> the programme and, where appropriate,<br />
<strong>in</strong> the assessment – you may, for example, wish to seek the cooperation <strong>of</strong> local<br />
employers to provide examples <strong>of</strong> current work procedures and practices<br />
● liais<strong>in</strong>g with employers to make sure a course is relevant to learners’ specific needs<br />
– you may, for example, wish to seek employer help <strong>in</strong> stress<strong>in</strong>g the importance <strong>of</strong><br />
effective teamwork, verbal and written communication, and mathematical skills <strong>in</strong><br />
ensur<strong>in</strong>g good laboratory practice.<br />
Resources<br />
As part <strong>of</strong> the approval process, your centre must make sure that the resource<br />
requirements below are <strong>in</strong> place before <strong>of</strong>fer<strong>in</strong>g the qualification.<br />
● Centres must have appropriate physical resources (for example, equipment, IT,<br />
learn<strong>in</strong>g materials, teach<strong>in</strong>g rooms) to support the delivery and assessment <strong>of</strong><br />
the qualification.<br />
● Staff <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> the assessment process must have relevant expertise and/or<br />
occupational experience.<br />
● There must be systems <strong>in</strong> place to ensure cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g pr<strong>of</strong>essional development for<br />
staff deliver<strong>in</strong>g the qualification.<br />
● Centres must have appropriate health-and-safety policies <strong>in</strong> place relat<strong>in</strong>g to the<br />
use <strong>of</strong> equipment by learners.<br />
● Centres must deliver the qualification <strong>in</strong> accordance with current equality<br />
legislation.<br />
● Your centre should refer to the Teacher guidance section <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividual units to<br />
check for any specific resources required.<br />
