Learn<strong>in</strong>g aim A: Investigate factors that contribute to healthy liv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

A.1 Pr<strong>in</strong>ciples, characteristics and the concept <strong>of</strong> a healthy balanced diet <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />

recommended daily <strong>in</strong>take <strong>of</strong> all food groups, and how dietary imbalance may<br />

lead to disorder <strong>in</strong> the human body, to <strong>in</strong>clude:<br />

a. under-eat<strong>in</strong>g and over-eat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

b. age and level <strong>of</strong> activity.<br />

A.2 The impact <strong>of</strong> exercise on the health <strong>of</strong> the human body, to <strong>in</strong>clude:<br />

a. physical effects <strong>of</strong> exercise (stress, cardiovascular health)<br />

b. weight-related issues<br />

c. physical mobility issues.<br />

A.3 Measures taken to improve the health <strong>of</strong> the population, <strong>in</strong> relation to unhealthy<br />

eat<strong>in</strong>g, smok<strong>in</strong>g and alcohol <strong>in</strong>take.<br />

Learn<strong>in</strong>g aim B: Know how preventative measures can be used to support<br />

healthy liv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

B.1 Pr<strong>in</strong>ciples <strong>of</strong> the immune system and immune response as the human body’s<br />

first l<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong> defence, to <strong>in</strong>clude:<br />

a. physical barriers<br />

b. chemical defences<br />

c. non-specific responses (<strong>in</strong>flammation, phagocytosis)<br />

d. specific responses (antibodies)<br />

e. potential advantages and disadvantages <strong>of</strong> vacc<strong>in</strong>ation.<br />

B.2 Screen<strong>in</strong>g programmes on the human body and their advantages and<br />

disadvantages, to <strong>in</strong>clude:<br />

a. screen<strong>in</strong>g programmes to detect cancer (breast and prostate)<br />

b. screen<strong>in</strong>g programmes for antenatal (Down’s syndrome)<br />

c. screen<strong>in</strong>g programmes for the newborn (phenylketonuria (PKU))<br />

d. vascular screen<strong>in</strong>g programmes (atherosclerosis).<br />
