QUALIFICATION<br />
The Lead Internal Verifier must be registered with <strong>Edexcel</strong> and is required to tra<strong>in</strong><br />
and standardise Assessors and Internal Verifiers us<strong>in</strong>g materials provided by <strong>Edexcel</strong><br />
that demonstrate the application <strong>of</strong> standards. In addition, the Lead Internal Verifier<br />
should provide general support. The Lead Internal Verifier:<br />
● has overall responsibility for the programme assessment plan, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
duration <strong>of</strong> assessment and completion <strong>of</strong> verification<br />
● can be responsible for more than one programme<br />
● ensures that there are valid assessment <strong>in</strong>struments for each unit <strong>in</strong> the<br />
programme<br />
● ensures that relevant assessment documentation is available and used for<br />
each unit<br />
● is responsible for the standardisation <strong>of</strong> Assessors and Internal Verifiers us<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>Edexcel</strong>-approved materials<br />
● authorises <strong>in</strong>dividual assessments as fit for purpose<br />
● checks samples <strong>of</strong> assessment decisions by <strong>in</strong>dividual Assessors and Internal<br />
Verifiers to validate that standards are be<strong>in</strong>g correctly applied<br />
● ensures the implementation <strong>of</strong> all general assessment policies developed by the<br />
centre for <strong>BTEC</strong> qualifications<br />
● has responsibility for ensur<strong>in</strong>g learner work is authenticated<br />
● liaises with <strong>Edexcel</strong>, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>Edexcel</strong> Standards Verifier.<br />
Internal Verifiers must oversee all assessment activity to make sure that <strong>in</strong>dividual<br />
Assessors do not mis<strong>in</strong>terpret the <strong>specification</strong> or undertake assessment that is not<br />
consistent with the national standard <strong>in</strong> respect <strong>of</strong> level, content or duration <strong>of</strong><br />
assessment. The process for ensur<strong>in</strong>g that assessment is be<strong>in</strong>g conducted correctly is<br />
called <strong>in</strong>ternal verification. Normally, a programme team will work together with<br />
<strong>in</strong>dividuals be<strong>in</strong>g both Assessors and Internal Verifiers, with the team leader or<br />
programme manager <strong>of</strong>ten be<strong>in</strong>g the registered Lead Internal Verifier.<br />
Internal Verifiers must make sure that assessment is fully validated with<strong>in</strong> your<br />
centre by:<br />
● check<strong>in</strong>g every assessment <strong>in</strong>strument carefully and endors<strong>in</strong>g it before it is used<br />
● ensur<strong>in</strong>g that each learner is assessed carefully and thoroughly us<strong>in</strong>g only the<br />
relevant assessment criteria and associated guidance with<strong>in</strong> the <strong>specification</strong><br />
● ensur<strong>in</strong>g the decisions <strong>of</strong> every Assessor for each unit at all grades and for all<br />
learners are <strong>in</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e with national standards.<br />
Assessors make assessment decisions and must be standardised us<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Edexcel</strong>approved<br />
materials before mak<strong>in</strong>g any assessment decisions. They are usually the<br />
teachers with<strong>in</strong> your school or college, but the term ‘Assessor’ refers to the specific<br />
responsibility for carry<strong>in</strong>g out assessment and mak<strong>in</strong>g sure that it is done <strong>in</strong> a way<br />
that is correct and consistent with national standards. Assessors may also draft or<br />
adapt <strong>in</strong>ternal assessment <strong>in</strong>struments.<br />
You are required to keep records <strong>of</strong> assessment and have assessment authorised by<br />
<strong>Edexcel</strong>. The ma<strong>in</strong> records are:<br />
● the overall plan <strong>of</strong> delivery and assessment, show<strong>in</strong>g the duration <strong>of</strong> assessment<br />
and the timel<strong>in</strong>e for <strong>in</strong>ternal verification<br />
● assessment <strong>in</strong>struments, which are authorised through an Internal Verifier<br />
● assessment records, which conta<strong>in</strong> the assessment decisions for each learner for<br />
each unit<br />
