The aim <strong>of</strong> this unit is to further develop your knowledge and understand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> the<br />
scientific process and build on the scientific <strong>in</strong>vestigation skills you have developed <strong>in</strong><br />
other units.<br />
It is essential that scientists have good <strong>in</strong>vestigatory skills, for example:<br />
● carry<strong>in</strong>g out theoretical and practical research<br />
● work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a pilot scale department<br />
● carry<strong>in</strong>g out quality control tests on chemical, biological or physical samples dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />
the stages <strong>of</strong> the manufacture <strong>of</strong> products<br />
● calibrat<strong>in</strong>g audiological, optical or medical equipment to ensure accuracy <strong>of</strong><br />
read<strong>in</strong>gs when test<strong>in</strong>g hear<strong>in</strong>g<br />
● grow<strong>in</strong>g cultures <strong>in</strong> a laboratory<br />
● test<strong>in</strong>g waste products<br />
● ensur<strong>in</strong>g food products are not harmful<br />
● ensur<strong>in</strong>g water is safe to dr<strong>in</strong>k<br />
● test<strong>in</strong>g and draw<strong>in</strong>g conclusions from forensic science evidence.<br />
The exam<strong>in</strong>ation will conta<strong>in</strong> questions on plann<strong>in</strong>g, process<strong>in</strong>g, present<strong>in</strong>g and<br />
analys<strong>in</strong>g data, draw<strong>in</strong>g conclusions and evaluat<strong>in</strong>g methodology and conclusions.<br />
You will need to demonstrate the application <strong>of</strong> the skills learnt <strong>in</strong> this unit, based on<br />
familiar and unfamiliar contexts given <strong>in</strong> an exam<strong>in</strong>ation paper.<br />
This unit can draw on your knowledge and understand<strong>in</strong>g from Units 5, 6 and 7 <strong>of</strong><br />
this qualification and the Key Stage 4 <strong>Science</strong> Programme <strong>of</strong> Study.<br />
When develop<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>vestigative skills learners can work together, however dur<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
exam<strong>in</strong>ation the learners will work <strong>in</strong>dependently under exam<strong>in</strong>ation conditions.<br />

B process, present and analyse data, and draw evidence-based conclusions<br />
C evaluate evidence and <strong>in</strong>vestigative methods.<br />
