in 2001, and remained at the CIS School until August 2002, at which time he was<br />

posted to Canberra to the <strong>Royal</strong> <strong>Australian</strong> <strong>Navy</strong>’s C4 directorate. He transferred to<br />

the Naval Reserve in 2004 and took up the position as the Senior Naval Historical<br />

Officer at the Sea Power Centre – Australia.<br />

Dr David Stevens<br />

Dr David Stevens has been the Director of Strategic and Historical Studies, Sea Power<br />

Centre – Australia, since retiring from full time naval service in 1994. He joined the<br />

<strong>Royal</strong> <strong>Australian</strong> Naval College in 1974 and completed a Bachelor of Arts degree at<br />

the University of New South Wales. He undertook the <strong>Royal</strong> <strong>Navy</strong>’s Principal Warfare<br />

Officer course in 1984 and specialised in anti-submarine warfare. Thereafter he served<br />

as a warfare officer on exchange in HMS Hermione, and was one of the first <strong>Australian</strong>s<br />

to conduct a Falkland Islands peace patrol. In 1990-91 he was posted to the staff of<br />

the <strong>Australian</strong> Task Group Commander during Operation DAMASK and the 1990-91<br />

Gulf War. He graduated from the <strong>Australian</strong> National University with a Master of Arts<br />

(Strategic Studies) degree in 1992, and in 2000 received his PhD in History from the<br />

University of New South Wales at the <strong>Australian</strong> Defence Force Academy.<br />

Commander Greg Swinden, RAN<br />

Commander Greg Swinden joined the <strong>Royal</strong> <strong>Australian</strong> <strong>Navy</strong> in 1985 and graduated<br />

from the <strong>Australian</strong> Defence Force Academy in 1987 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in<br />

Politics and History. After training as a Supply Officer he undertook numerous postings<br />

ashore and afloat including service in HMA Ships Swan, Melbourne and Kanimbla.<br />

He has also seen operational service in East Timor, the Solomon Islands, the Persian<br />

Gulf, and during 2003-04 was the <strong>Royal</strong> <strong>Australian</strong> <strong>Navy</strong> Liaison Officer in Singapore.<br />

He attended the <strong>Australian</strong> Command and Staff College in 2005 and is currently the<br />

Deputy Fleet Supply Officer in Fleet Headquarters.<br />

Dr Andrew Tian Huet Tan<br />

Dr Andrew Tan is currently an Associate Professor at the University of New South Wales.<br />

He was a senior lecturer in defence studies at King’s College, London, where he taught<br />

at the Joint Services Command and Staff College. Previously he was with the Institute<br />

of Defence and Strategic Studies at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.<br />

Born in Singapore he is a naturalised <strong>Australian</strong> and has published extensively on<br />

regional security issues.<br />

Lieutenant Commander Chris Watson, RAN<br />

Lieutenant Commander Chris Watson transferred to the <strong>Royal</strong> <strong>Australian</strong> <strong>Navy</strong> from<br />

the <strong>Royal</strong> <strong>Navy</strong>. A Principal Warfare Officer and ex-Cold War diplomat in the USSR<br />

and Poland, he was Executive Officer of the frigate HMS Iron Duke, First Lieutenant<br />

of HMS Ocean, and was the J2 intelligence chief in Gibraltar during the 1990-91 Gulf
