<strong>Swinburne</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Technology</strong><br />

■ overseeing the maintenance and enhancement <strong>of</strong> the<br />

quality <strong>of</strong> teaching, research and learning within<br />

<strong>Swinburne</strong>.<br />

Council’s role focuses upon policy and strategic issues<br />

concerning the <strong>University</strong>. It receives specialist advice<br />

through a series <strong>of</strong> committees designated to carry out<br />

certain functions.<br />

Academic Board<br />

The powers <strong>of</strong> Academic Board, as set down in Section 30<br />

<strong>of</strong> the <strong>Swinburne</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Technology</strong> Act are as<br />

follows. The Academic Board:<br />

■ may discuss and submit to the Council an opinion on<br />

any matter relating to the prescribed higher education<br />

programs <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> and, in particular, may make<br />

to the Council such recommendations as it thinks<br />

proper with respect to instruction, studies, discipline,<br />

examinations, assessments, research, degrees and<br />

diplomas in those programs <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong><br />

■ must report to the Council on all matters submitted to it<br />

by the Council for report<br />

■ has such other powers and duties as are conferred or<br />

imposed upon it by this Act or by the Statutes or<br />

Regulations<br />

■ subject to this Act and, except as otherwise prescribed<br />

the Statutes and Regulations, may regulate its own<br />

proceedings.<br />

Chancellery<br />

The Chancellery comprises the <strong>of</strong>fices <strong>of</strong> the Vice-<br />

Chancellor, the Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor, the Deputy<br />

Vice-Chancellors, the Pro Vice-Chancellor Research and<br />

Industry Liaison, and the Vice Presidents.<br />

The Chancellery, responsible to the <strong>University</strong> Council, has<br />

a range <strong>of</strong> individual and collective responsibilities and is<br />

concerned with policy development and matters affecting<br />

the <strong>University</strong> as a whole. Its principal functions include<br />

the strategic planning <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong>, the distribution <strong>of</strong><br />

resources to meet both the operational and strategic<br />

requirements <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong>, the monitoring <strong>of</strong> progress<br />

towards the achievement <strong>of</strong> institutional objectives and<br />

ensuring an effective interface between the <strong>University</strong>,<br />

State and Federal Governments, business, industry and the<br />

wider community.<br />

Board <strong>of</strong> Technical Studies<br />

The powers <strong>of</strong> the Board <strong>of</strong> Technical Studies, as set down<br />

in Section 35 <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Swinburne</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Technology</strong><br />

Act are as follows:<br />

■ academic oversight <strong>of</strong> prescribed programs and courses<br />

<strong>of</strong> study in technical and further education<br />

■ providing advice to the Council and the Board <strong>of</strong><br />

Technical and Further Education on:<br />

(i) the conduct and content <strong>of</strong> those programs and<br />

courses; and<br />

(ii) the awarding <strong>of</strong> certificates and diplomas in<br />

technical and further education.<br />

The Board <strong>of</strong> Technical Studies shall consist <strong>of</strong> the<br />

prescribed number <strong>of</strong> members each <strong>of</strong> whom is elected<br />

or appointed as prescribed. There shall be a chairperson<br />

and deputy chairperson <strong>of</strong> the Board <strong>of</strong> Technical Studies<br />

elected by the Board.<br />
