<strong>Swinburne</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Technology</strong><br />
the operations <strong>of</strong> the campus, report on it, manage the<br />
library during a period when the position was vacant, and<br />
participate in the selection <strong>of</strong> a new campus librarian.<br />
Arrangements have been made for up to 90% <strong>of</strong> online<br />
content to be provided to overseas campuses.<br />
The Alumni and Development Office appointed an<br />
International Alumni Officer in 2002 who is based at the<br />
Sarawak campus. The Office continues to provide a point <strong>of</strong><br />
liaison for the <strong>University</strong>’s involvement in the Australian<br />
Universities International Alumni Convention, and has established<br />
an electronic newsletter aimed at international alumni.<br />
Student Services trialed a domestic/international student<br />
integration program for Japanese and local students. This<br />
program aimed to increase integration between local and<br />
international students, and to enhance internationalisation<br />
for our local students on campuses. Induction sessions on<br />
adjustment skills to studies were run for international<br />
students according to the specific needs <strong>of</strong> each group, for<br />
example, PhD students, exchange students and mature-age<br />
students. A training workshop on basic listening and<br />
counselling skills was held for International Student<br />
Advisors.<br />
<strong>Annual</strong> <strong>Report</strong> 2002<br />
Careers and Employment provides access to international<br />
employment opportunities through SwinTrak which <strong>of</strong>fers<br />
students and job seekers the ability to best prepare for<br />
today’s competitive job market. SwinTrak allows its users to:<br />
■ search for jobs locally and globally<br />
■ create a SwinTrak resume that can be used onsite to<br />
apply for positions, is stored on our database, and can be<br />
accessed by employers<br />
■ create covering letters which can be attached to your<br />
resume whilst applying for positions onsite<br />
■ set up job search Agents, which are automatic job<br />
hunters that can e-mail positions to your inbox daily.<br />
Visits to Malaysian employers to establish links for<br />
international graduates were undertaken in 2002, and a<br />
brochure to market the services <strong>of</strong>fered by the Unit to<br />
potential international employers was developed. The unit<br />
also produced a publication to support international<br />
students seeking employment in Australia.<br />
Student accommodation opened at <strong>Swinburne</strong> Lilydale<br />
provided much-needed infrastructure for international<br />
students, especially considering Lilydale’s location in the<br />
outer-east <strong>of</strong> Melbourne.<br />
Learning and Teaching Support have provided web sites<br />
that can be accessed from overseas for all undergraduate<br />
courses and most postgraduate courses. Business,<br />
engineering and communications education materials have<br />
been provided to overseas campuses; and access facilitated<br />
to Blackboard for use by overseas campuses. The Learning<br />
and Teaching Support Help Desk is available to students <strong>of</strong>f<br />
shore through a web request form and via email.<br />
Grants<br />
<strong>University</strong> Mobility in the Asia Pacific (UMAP) grants to the<br />
value <strong>of</strong> $42,500 were awarded to the Higher Education<br />
Division in 2002. This will allow ten undergraduate students<br />
to undertake in-country study or accredited work<br />
experience programs <strong>of</strong> varying lengths in Canada, Korea,<br />
Malaysia, New Zealand, and the United States <strong>of</strong> America.<br />
<strong>Swinburne</strong> staff members will also be visiting these<br />
exchange institutions to negotiate and monitor these<br />
arrangements.<br />
