Awards<br />

Lilydale lecturer, John Iacono, received an Order <strong>of</strong><br />

Australia medal in the 2002 Queens Birthday Honours list<br />

for services to education.<br />

Mr. Derek Whitehead, Director <strong>of</strong> Information Resources,<br />

received an Order <strong>of</strong> Australia (OAM) in the 2002 Australia<br />

Day honours for his services to library and information<br />

services.<br />

Dr. David Booth travelled to the Philippines to receive an<br />

honorary doctorate from De La Salle <strong>University</strong> in Manila,<br />

the largest <strong>University</strong> in the world, in recognition <strong>of</strong> his<br />

dedicated work in the development <strong>of</strong> science and<br />

engineering in the Philippines.<br />

Community Service Award<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Avni Sali, Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>Swinburne</strong>’s Graduate School<br />

<strong>of</strong> Integrative Medicine, received the prestigious St.<br />

Michael’s Medallion, presented by the Executive Director <strong>of</strong><br />

the United Nations Association <strong>of</strong> Australia.<br />

Vocational Education and Training:<br />

Angela Bond, TAFE Tasmania.<br />

Higher Education:<br />

Sandra Petersen, <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Wollongong.<br />

Self Employed:<br />

Sharon Carvolth, Principal, Audit Services International.<br />

Less than five years in the Workforce:<br />

Eva Hanley, Thiess, Pty Ltd.<br />

More than five years in the Workforce – Joint Winners:<br />

Laura Thomas, Manager, Holden Monaro Program, Holden Ltd.<br />

Bridget Dunn, Unit Manager, Dinez Nominees.<br />

IBM Award Information <strong>Technology</strong> – Student:<br />

Sarah Pulis, La Trobe <strong>University</strong>.<br />

<strong>Annual</strong> <strong>Report</strong> 2002<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Sali received this award for his unusual and<br />

highly distinguished contribution to a broader<br />

understanding <strong>of</strong> health and well-being and for his very<br />

innovative community education in the field <strong>of</strong> holistic<br />

health. These awards acknowledge the contribution made<br />

by individuals in outstanding community work.<br />

Building Award<br />

<strong>Swinburne</strong>’s purpose-built National Institute <strong>of</strong> Circus Arts<br />

(NICA) building at Prahran campus gained significant<br />

recognition in the recent Property Council <strong>of</strong> Australia<br />

Awards. The winning building was The Grandstand at<br />

Victoria Racing Club, which had a budget in excess <strong>of</strong> $80<br />

million, however <strong>Swinburne</strong>’s building (cost: $4 million)<br />

received one <strong>of</strong> only two other awards, a Special<br />

Commendation. Given the tight budget and stringent<br />

selection criteria for the awards, this commemoration is a<br />

tribute to all the staff that contributed to the building’s<br />

design and construction.<br />

2002 Awards for Outstanding Women in Non-<br />

Traditional areas<br />

The National Centre for Gender & Cultural Diversity at<br />

<strong>Swinburne</strong> organises these awards which pr<strong>of</strong>ile and<br />

applaud women who have achieved outstanding success<br />

in non-traditional areas across Australia. <strong>Swinburne</strong> is a<br />

major sponsor <strong>of</strong> the awards, and in 2002, other sponsors<br />

were IBM and the National Australia Bank.<br />

IBM Award Information <strong>Technology</strong> – Workplace Manager:<br />

National Australia Bank Award – Women in Banking and<br />

Financial Services:<br />

Sylvia Falzon, Head, Client Service and Operations,<br />

Alpha Investment Management.<br />
