Entrepreneurship Educator <strong>of</strong> the Year<br />
For the second year in a row, the Award for<br />
Entrepreneurship Educator <strong>of</strong> the Year from the Business<br />
Higher Education Round Table went to an academic from<br />
the Australian Graduate School <strong>of</strong> Entrepreneurship. Dr<br />
John Bailey won the award in 2002, following on from<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Emeritus Murray Gillin in 2001.<br />
Five Star program<br />
The Master <strong>of</strong> Business Administration program run by the<br />
Australian Graduate School <strong>of</strong> Entrepreneurship was given<br />
a ‘five star’ ranking by the Graduate Management<br />
Association <strong>of</strong> Australia – the first time the <strong>Swinburne</strong><br />
MBA has achieved the top level rating.<br />
Victoria Fellowship<br />
A PhD student in the School <strong>of</strong> Engineering and Science,<br />
Rachael Prince, was successful in winning one <strong>of</strong> the<br />
highly prestigious Victoria Fellowships which will allow her<br />
to further her studies in the United Kingdom and the<br />
Netherlands. The Victoria Prize recognises exceptional<br />
achievement in science, engineering or technology. It is<br />
awarded to an individual or group whose leading scientific<br />
discovery or technological innovation has significantly<br />
advanced Victoria’s knowledge base or has the potential to<br />
lead to a commercial outcome. Candidates are nominated<br />
by their peers.<br />
Research<br />
The Chancellor’s Research Scholarship for 2002 was<br />
awarded to Haydon Knight, School <strong>of</strong> Biophysical Sciences<br />
and Electrical Engineering, for his project titled<br />
“Computational tools for use in baseband pulsar survey”.<br />
<strong>Swinburne</strong> Excellence Awards<br />
In 2002 there were two winners for the Research<br />
Excellence Award:<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Min Gu and Dennis McPhail from the Centre for<br />
MicroPhotonics, School <strong>of</strong> Biophysical Sciences and<br />
Electrical Engineering, in recognition <strong>of</strong> their research in<br />
the fields <strong>of</strong> optical data storage using polymer dispersed<br />
liquid crystals; and<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Con Stough from the Centre <strong>of</strong><br />
Neuropsychopharmacology, School <strong>of</strong> Biophysical Sciences<br />
and Electrical Engineering, in recognition <strong>of</strong> his research<br />
work in the fields <strong>of</strong> Neuropsychology and Cognitive<br />
Neurosciences.<br />
A Research Encouragement Award was presented to John<br />
Butler from the Arts Department, TAFE School <strong>of</strong> Arts,<br />
Hospitality and Sciences, in recognition <strong>of</strong> his research<br />
work in ‘Second Class Theatre – Theatre in Victoria 1966-<br />
2000’ .<br />
The Research Excellence Awards were presented to the<br />
winners at the Research Dinner on 15 October 2002.<br />
CRC (Cooperative Research Centres)<br />
<strong>Technology</strong> Award<br />
Each year the CRCs organisation awards prizes to projects<br />
that have achieved outstanding results. The CRC for<br />
International Food Manufacturing (based at <strong>Swinburne</strong>)<br />
was successful in winning a <strong>Technology</strong> Transfer Award<br />
based on the float <strong>of</strong> Plantic, a spin-<strong>of</strong>f company that will<br />
commercialise research into biodegradable polymers.<br />
Flexible Learning & Teaching<br />
Undergraduate Student wins International<br />
Conference Award<br />
Mr. Daniel Angus, a third year student in the Bachelor <strong>of</strong><br />
Science (Research & Development), Bachelor <strong>of</strong><br />
Engineering (Electrical and Electronic Engineering), is the<br />
joint winner <strong>of</strong> the best paper award (not just student<br />
paper) for his paper and presentation at the Cairn’s<br />
conference, ‘The Fifteenth International Conference on<br />
Industrial and Engineering Application <strong>of</strong> Artificial<br />
Intelligence and Expert Systems’.<br />
The title <strong>of</strong> the paper was ‘Ant Colony Optimisation Applied<br />
to a Dynamically Changing Problem’. Co-authors were<br />
Associate Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Tim Hendtlass and Daniel Angus; and<br />
the paper was presented by Daniel Angus.<br />
TAFE students continue to excel in their scholarship, with<br />
<strong>Swinburne</strong> students recognised at state and national titles:<br />
■ four students won silver medals at the National<br />
Workskills titles - Matthew Bell and Ben Walker<br />
competed in the construction carpentry section, Joshua<br />
Deppeler in the fluid power section and Ante Salinovic in<br />
the web design section<br />
■ an international student, Kazumi Maruo from Japan,<br />
represented <strong>Swinburne</strong> in the State final <strong>of</strong> the Student<br />
Waiter <strong>of</strong> the Year competition<br />
■ Jonathan Lilley, a graduate <strong>of</strong> the Diploma <strong>of</strong> Natural<br />
Resource Management program, was named runner-up<br />
at Victoria’s Outstanding Student <strong>of</strong> the Year (Koori).<br />
