<strong>Swinburne</strong> Venture Cup<br />

This was held for the third year in 2002 attracting 176<br />

students in 51 groups. It is a 10 week business planning<br />

competition for teams <strong>of</strong> students at each level <strong>of</strong> the<br />

university – TAFE, Undergraduate and Postgraduate. The<br />

task sounds straightforward but students involved have<br />

spent hundreds <strong>of</strong> hours devising, expanding and refining<br />

their business concept.<br />

Undergraduate<br />

Winners<br />

YES Youth Education Services (Amanda Stoyan, Bachelor<br />

<strong>of</strong> Social Sciences – Psychology, Suzanne Eldridge,<br />

Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Arts – Psychology/Psychophysiology, Ami<br />

Seabrook, Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Social Sciences).<br />

Their plan covers the development <strong>of</strong> an integrated service<br />

response for students experiencing difficulties with issues<br />

such as self-esteem, bullying, depression, etc.<br />

<strong>Annual</strong> <strong>Report</strong> 2002<br />

The Cup Presentation Function was held in December at<br />

the Australian Graduate School <strong>of</strong> Entrepreneurship. The<br />

night was a rousing success with over 100 people<br />

attending, and the Hon John Brumby, Minister for State<br />

and Regional Development delivering the keynote speech<br />

and awarding the prizes.<br />

Minister Brumby was introduced by our Chancellor Dr.<br />

Douglas Mitchell, who stressed the importance <strong>of</strong><br />

developing business skills in our graduates, and<br />

acknowledged <strong>Swinburne</strong>’s leading role in<br />

entrepreneurship education & development.<br />

2002 winners <strong>of</strong> the Chancellor’s prizes ($10,000 to each<br />

winning team), and finalists were:<br />

Spin Sisters (Rebecca Russell, Ilena Solaja, Diploma <strong>of</strong> Arts<br />

– Small Companies and Community Theatre, Matthew<br />

Barnes, Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Business).<br />

A theatre company using creative entertainment to explore<br />

topics and issues in corporate and secondary and tertiary<br />

institutions.<br />

Finalists<br />

Guardog – Email filtering system for SPAM and Virus<br />

prevention.<br />

Lezar – production <strong>of</strong> hand made jewellery, marketed<br />

through various outlets.<br />

Progressive Wake Camp – Establishment and operation <strong>of</strong><br />

a wakeboard camp at Eildon.<br />

Finalists<br />

Easybuild – Fire <strong>Technology</strong> Services. Use <strong>of</strong> microchips<br />

and scanners in the building industry to identify wires and<br />

pipes.<br />

ESAS – Real-time monitoring <strong>of</strong> elite athletes’ physical<br />

condition.<br />

Peacock Blue – Store/Café providing ‘funky’ maternity<br />

fashion.<br />

Postgraduate<br />

InVision (Paul Bitetto, Susan Swingler, Daniel Yuncken,<br />

Master Entrepreneurship and Innovation)<br />

Cellular imaging company – technology enables live<br />

microscopic imaging at sub-cellular levels for clinical<br />

diagnosis.<br />

Whistling Kite – remote monitoring <strong>of</strong> vital signs for ‘at<br />

risk’ members <strong>of</strong> the community<br />

SaveHeart – The design and development <strong>of</strong> tissue<br />

engineered constructs and organs<br />

Ihelp Support Limited – Innovative computer support for<br />

home and business<br />

Stanford/<strong>Swinburne</strong> Enterprise Award<br />

Awarded to InVision – $5,000 donated by the Stanford<br />

Group (Charles Pellegrino & Fred Ursini)<br />

Information City<br />

Victoria Incubator Award<br />

Awarded to Whistling Kite – A valuable package <strong>of</strong><br />

business assessment, mentoring and potential incubator<br />

occupancy, for the Information and Communications<br />

<strong>Technology</strong> entry with highest potential.<br />
