9. Ensure the record bases are not in contact by scribing lines between the maxillary and<br />
mandibular dentures on three widely separated areas. Remove the record bases,<br />
superimpose the lines and check the posterior regions for areas of record base contact -<br />
eliminate contacts between the record bases, or between the record base and the occlusion<br />
rims (these will cause tilting movements of the record bases). There will be only one<br />
position where all three lines will line up.<br />
10. Continue to adjust the rims until the interocclusal distance is 2-4 mm and there is even<br />
contact between the rims in the centric position.<br />
A patient with excessive occlusal vertical dimension may have symptoms:<br />
- Sore muscles<br />
- Sore spots on the tissue bearing surfaces<br />
- Rapid bone resorption<br />
- clicking of dentures during speech<br />
A patient with inadequate occlusal vertical dimension may have symptoms:<br />
- Face looks collapsed - chin too close to the nose or protruding<br />
- Fatigue when chewing<br />
- Sore muscles or joints
