Selecting & Setting Teeth - 53<br />

Lingualized Maxillary Tooth Setup: Maxillary teeth are set with the distal cusp of the<br />

first molar and the cusps of the second molar raised slightly above the occlusal plane.<br />

This provides a curve of Spee to aid in maintaining posterior contacts.<br />

Monoplane Denture Tooth Setup: All denture teeth are set flush with the occlusal<br />

plane, in maximum contact with the opposing teeth. No overbite is present.<br />

- Posterior teeth should not be placed over a sharply ascending ridge. If there is not<br />

enough room, set three, rather than four posterior teeth if necessary. When doing so,<br />

eliminate the 2nd premolars, since the first premolar usually has a longer neck<br />

(important for esthetics) and it has a lingual contour that smooths the transition from<br />

the anterior teeth to the posterior teeth (in some moulds). Don't eliminate molars as<br />

they provide a greater number of centric and excursive contacts.<br />

- Usually set the maxillary posterior teeth first as their placement has more impact on<br />

esthetics, especially the first premolar.
