identify other undesirable contours. This photo demonstrates an impingement of the<br />

coronoid process on the posterior denture flange in lateral excursions. This interference<br />

caused both pain and loosening of the denture.<br />

Figure 20. A sharp, thin or overextended periphery in the hamular notch area can cause very<br />

painful ulcers for a denture wearer. Use of indicating medium for adjustment of these areas<br />

is critical, as removal of acrylic in the wrong area can result in a breach of the posterior<br />

palatal seal, resulting in loosening of the denture with little relief of the discomfort.
